1926 is not a random year...Works published prior to 1978 generally enter the public domain 75 years after publication. 2001-75=1926. Yes, everything Victor Hugo wrote is in public domain, in his original French. However, copyright law equally pertains to translations. So if the translation was published after 1926, it may not be in public domain yet. I have no intention of violating anyone's copyright on this site.
