Stanely Milgram in the 1960s conducted several studies attempting to prove that everyone is connected to everyone else within a small number of "degrees of separation." We may not know X, but a friend of a friend of a friend knows X.

In the 1990s this theory came into heavy use around college campuses in a game that sprouted up called "Degrees of Kevin Bacon." Noone knows for sure why Kevin Bacon was chosen, but he has been in movies with a diverse group from Hollywood, making him a fairly good choice.

Victor Hugo is separated from Kevin Bacon by 2 degrees.

1) Hugo was given writing credits for Les Miserables (2000) which starred John Malkovich as Javert
2) John Malkovich was in Queens Logic (1991) with Kevin Bacon
